A student who was captured on CCTV setting a dormitory on fire has been arrested. The Form 2 student at Namwela Boys High School was taken into custody on Sunday.
CCTV footage showed that on Saturday at 8pm the student sprinkled a substance at a corner of the dormitory. He then dropped a lighter and got out of the dormitory through a window.
The fire spread fast and burnt down everything in the dormitory.
According to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Bungoma West, no student was hurt during the incident.
Fire Incidents Continue
This latest incident adds on to the increasingly worrying fire outbreaks at schools.
Last week, a fire at Bungoma High School burnt down a dormitory early Friday morning. In another incident, a fire razed 3 dormitories in Kituro High School in Baringo County.
The DCI has warned that students found guilty of arson shall have the offences shown on the police clearance certificate. This is popularly known as the certificate of good conduct.
Education CS George Magoha has warned students against the rising indiscipline. He asked parents not to tolerate indiscipline among their children. Magoha also asked teachers to be very vigilant in noticing cases of indiscipline in students.
We still have questions about these burning issues. Is there an end to this? What do you think will be a lasting solution to these incidents?
