Homes, Sugarcane Farms Torched in Transmara

On Tuesday night, unknown attackers set ablaze a sugarcane plantation and a house. The incident ignited tensions in the area with residents fearing an eruption of inter clan clashes.

The Isiria and Ilwuasi-Nkishu clans share a common border at Nkaararo Enoreetet, with a history of tension between them.

In August last year 2020, clashes erupted when a farmer was prevented from accessing his land. The violence led to the torching of several acres of sugarcane plantations and 2 houses.

Use of Social Media

In this latest incident, there have been reports of social media being used to fuel tensions between the two clans. Area Deputy County Commissioner Hassan Noor urged residents of Transmara to avoid spreading messages of propaganda that incite hatred on social media platforms.

Noor added that the attack is being treated as a criminal act and a search is underway for the perpetrators.

In a similar incident, The Garissa County Assembly offices were also set ablaze in an incident whose cause is yet to be established.
