Fire Burns Down Garissa County Assembly
The Garissa County Assembly was this morning burned down.
Reports indicate that the fire broke out at around 8.30am, ravaging several county offices, which are mostly made of wooden structures. Other offices that were razed include those of the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and the County Assembly chambers. The auditor, payroll, finance, assembly staff and sacco offices, as well as committee meeting rooms were also not spared.
The County Assembly Minority Leader Mohammed Ali said that about 40-50% of the building had been gutted down.
Ali added, “The County Assembly chambers and a whole building that hosted almost 25 departmental committees and relevant offices are almost completely destroyed.”
The county’s fire department and the military were part of teams involved in trying to put out the fire. However, residents decried the slow response from the fire department, with reports that they had even run out of water.
Luckily, there were no casualties from the incident.
The cause of the fire has also not yet been established and investigations are undergoing to ascertain the same.
