Tiaty MP Arrested over Kapedo Attacks

Why was Tiaty MP William Kamket Arrested?

Member of Parliament for Tiaty constituency William Kamket has been arrested in connection to attacks that occurred in Kapedo, Baringo County.

The law maker was arrested and held at the Kileleshwa Police station by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. According to officials he may be moved to Nakuru for arraignment.

Speaking to journalists over the phone, the KANU MP denied being told the reason for his arrest. However according to police sources he is linked to an incident where some youth partook in an oath ceremony before heading to Kapedo.

This comes days after he and other leaders from the area called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to de-escalate the ongoing security operation.

They cited that the operation was too intense and inhumane. Land disagreements between the Pokot and Turkana communities and extreme poverty were named as the causes of the skirmishes.

Security forces have been engaged in clashes with armed bandits in the area.

A number of bandits had attacked the Arabal area and made away with 50 herds of cattle. Over 70 officers then pursued them, resulting in 6 deaths and several sustaining serious injuries. This was confirmed by George Natembeya who is the Rift Valley Regional Commander.

The security operation started after the killing of a senior GSU officer. Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said that the killing was premeditated. He added that the operation will be extensive and will see that all criminals involved are arrested.

CS Matiang’i hopes that a lasting peaceful solution can be reached. He asked locals to work with security forces to put an end to the issue.
