13 Applications Received For CJ Position

On January 11th, the position of Chief Justice of Kenya fell vacant. This was after Former CJ David Maraga attained the mandatory retirement age of 70.

So far, 13 applications have been received for the position of the CJ. This is according to a statement released by the Judicial Service Commission. 

Who has applied so far?

The applicants are Appeal Court Justices William Ouko, Martha Koome, Justices D.K. Marete, Mathew Nduma and Said Juma Chitembwe. Others are Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia, Prof Otinga Mare, Prof Moni Wekesa, Alice Jepkoech Yano and Prof Patricia Mbote.

Lawyer Philip Murgor, Otondi Ontweka and Brian Matagaro are also eyeing the seat. 

Judiciary Chief Registrar and JSC Secretary Anne Amadi said that the applicants will be shortlisted within 14 days. This is in accordance with the Judicial Service Act.

Applicants will then be interviewed and a recommended candidate shall be sent to the National Assembly for approval. Once approved, the candidate shall then be appointed by the President, in accordance with Article 166 (1) of the Constitution.

According to Article 167 (2), the Chief Justice shall serve for not more than 10 years. However, as per Article 167 (1), the CJ will vacate the office once attaining the mandatory retirement age. This was the case with David Maraga who had served for only 4.5 years.
