Senator Yusuf Haji Passes On

The family of Garissa County Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji has announced his passing on today morning. Yusuf Haji passed on at the Aga Khan Hospital where he was receiving treatment. 

Senator Haji also chaired the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce.

Brief History Of Haji

The long-time civil servant was born on 23rd December, 1940 in Garissa. Haji attended the University of Birmingham where he obtained a Diploma in Management and Finance Control. 

He was married with 9 children. However, his sons Abdul Yusuf Haji and Noordin Yusuf Haji are perhaps the most well-known. Both were involved in rescuing people during the Westgate Mall terror attack in 2013.

Abdul Haji is a businessman while his elder brother Noordin Haji is the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Yusuf Haji’s Achievements

Senator Haji joined public service in 1960 as a District Officer (D.O). Slowly rising through the ranks, he served as Provincial Commissioner between 1970 and 1997.

He became nominated in the Parliament in 1998 and would later be elected on a KANU ticket, representing Ijaara Constituency.

Haji served in the Cabinet as Assistant Minister in the Office of the President and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.

He was appointed Defence MInister in the 2008 Grand Coalition Government. It was during his tenure that Kenya started the war on Al Shabaab. He later became Minister of Internal Security after the Demise of Professor George Saitoti.

The Senator passed on after a long illness and will be buried at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery.
