Shaffie Weru Threatens To Sue Radio Africa

Celebrated radio presenter and former Lift Off breakfast show host Shaffie Weru has threatened to sue Radio Africa for unfair dismissal.

This follows his recent termination from the station, alongside Nevile Musya and DJ Joe Mfalme

The threat was revealed in a demand letter addressed to the company’s General Manager.

What Are Shaffie’s Demands?

Shaffie is demanding a Ksh. 682,500 one month’s salary in lieu of notice. For unfair dismissal, Shaffie wants a 12 month salary of Ksh. 8,190,000. He also wants a Ksh. 12,285,000 gratuity for his 18 years service to Radio Africa Group

In total, the damages add up to over Ksh. 21 million.

Shaffie wants his demands met in 7 days, whereby he shall move to court if no action is taken.

Below are screenshots of the letter.

Shaffie Claims Unfair Dismissal

The letter notes that Shaffie had formally received a suspension letter on Friday 26th March. However, he found out that he was terminated via social media channels on the morning of 28th March.

This was after receiving calls from family and friends about a letter that had been circulating on social media the previous night.

Further, without basing your findings on any investigations whatsoever, and solely basing a purported decision on “Social Media Investigators and jury”, you concluded that our Client was guilty of gross misconduct for purportedly making “inappropriate and insensitive comments”… without according him an opportunity to be heard or defend himself…

What’s interesting is that the letter shows he had made the alleged comments on Thursday, March 25th. In contrast, his dismissal letter refers to comments made on 24th March 2021.

His lawyer, Dr. Nabil M. Orina, says that this is confusing his client as to what exactly was the reason for his dismissal.

It is interesting how the drama at HBR is unfolding, keep it C.O.K for updates on this story.
