BBI Is Not The Solution – All Saints Cathedral Reverend

“We can have money for BBI, but we have no money to build schools that our children learn under trees.”

No, those weren’t the words from your favorite politician in a ‘Hustler Movement’ rally over the weekend. Rather, these were words from Rev. Sammy Wainaina, provost at ACK All Saints Cathedral Nairobi.

In a sermon titled ”Demands Of Leadership”, the Reverend came out strongly to criticise both the government and?.

He called out proponents of the BBI report, emphasizing on the need to utilize the little we have first before proposing for more. In particular, he wondered how the BBI proposed 35% revenue allocation to counties, yet the government is finding it hard to fund the current 15% allocation.

Call for Empowerment

The clergyman further stated that having tribes represented in top leadership, as proposed in the BBI, will not make the common mwananchi any richer. He said that this was an agenda by the political class to loot the country.

Reverend Wainaina added that what Kenyans need is “opportunities for employment, road networks, market for our produce, quality healthcare and quality education for every Kenyan.”

The provost called out President Uhuru Kenyatta for his claim that over Ksh. 2 Billion is stolen every month. He wondered how the Head of State has all the state tools at his disposal and not make use of them.

“Either the government knows who steals Kenyans’ money, or the government is part of the stealing,” said Reverend Wainaina.

Kenyans online had different reactions to this rare move with many applauding him for speaking the truth.

Some are seemingly worried for him given that he is speaking against the government.

Others just can’t seem to put the politics aside.

The church has been under fire for allowing politicians to talk and incide during sermons. However, the clergyman recently announced that he has banned politicians from speaking at the church. Coupled with these new statements, it seems the church is taking a stand against politicians.

It will be interesting to see what politicians have to say about this, if at all they’ll be bold enough to reply.
